A friend with kids told me about the Cambridge Clothing Exchange on Evertizi Way (off of Cambridge street, near Inman Square). Here's their link: http://www.solutionsatwork.org/Services/ChildrensClothing.html.

Even at a used-clothing outlet, the cost of clothing a family of four can be devastating for transitioning families. And the vast majority of homeless families are single-parent families — primarily mothers with small or grade-school children.
At the Children's Clothing Exchange, they trade for what they need — an eight-year old's winter coat for a ten-year old's summer outfit. Good quality for good quality. We take toys, too.

People can register with them so that when they drop clothes etc. off, the number of bags are logged on their sheet. They then can take bags of clothes, etc. for their kids. They have tons of baby gear (for free), tons of toys/books/videos (for free), shoes and clothes for kids (exchange rate of one bag donated, one bag to take), infant cloth diapers and supplies, and mom stuff.

Of course you can drop stuff off there and not take anything in return as well.

Many years ago for Christmas my mother bought me a set of bed sheets. This must have been SO many years ago, like well over 8 years ago because for many of her last years I did all of her shopping, even for Christmas presents.

I always want to have sheets with a print on them, preferably a floral print. They are rather hard to find! I had even asked for sheets that year.

So this set has a floral print with yellow, blue and pink flowers. Sounds perfect for me. Just what I say I want in a sheet.

But for some reason I Never opened this set to use it because looking at it through the clear packaging, it just looked off to me somehow. The colors were yellow, blue and pink, but they looked like the wrong shades of yellow, blue and pink. It seemed a very busy pattern and I just thought I didn't like this sheet pattern at all. It didn't appeal to me as being pretty. I kept the sheets in the package, intending to donate it to charity perhaps. Of course I never got around to donating it. It sat in the back of my sheet drawer just waiting for something to happen to it sort of like an albatross around my neck. Long long ago, I think I even brought it to a store to exchange it but didn't find anything I liked to replace it so the set came home again and back into the sheet drawer.

So last night I was going to change my sheets and didn't have much to choose from because of laundry issues. So I decided I might as well open this set of sheets that has been hanging around for 8+ years. I took out the sheets and put them on the bed and guess what happened? I like them. I really like them. I think they are pretty and just what I wanted.

I've always had pangs of guilt about these particular sheets. First when I received them I wasn't that enthusiastic about them and I felt bad about that because my mother had picked them out. Then because they were sitting around for years taking up space, not being used and not being donated. That felt wasteful. And now I am using the sheets and I suddenly really love the pattern and the colors and I think of all those many years that they have been waiting around patiently in my drawer. I wish I could tell my mother that she was right and she picked out a very very pretty set of sheets for me. In some ways it makes me feel sad that I can't tell her and in some ways it makes me feel happy that I am now finally using her present. Sheets seem like a simple everyday thing, but today it feels like I received a present from her years after she was gone.

Maybe...maybe not.

Life in the House....not quite settled

Stella and I have moved into our new home. Or perhaps it is more accurate to say we have moved into one room in our new home. We slept here for the first time on Thursday night. Stella has not yet even seen the rest of the house. She is restricted to one room until some things get straightened out. For example the cellar door was taken off to be painted and hasn't been replaced yet. I don't want her in the cellar where there are lots of bad things for her to get into.

In my bedroom I have set up my small tv and vcr, the telephone and my laptop. There are some rooms where there are no lights or working outlets so I can't use them after dark. Until late this afternoon I had no door on the first floor bathroom. It was being painted. It has been replaced, but it has no doorknob yet. The upstairs bathroom has nothing in it. No toilet, sink or shower. Not even tiles on the floor or walls yet. As for showers, there is a shower in the first floor bathroom, but there is no hot water in the house. Hopefully I'll have hot water on Monday...or Tuesday....or Wednesday.

I have no kitchen. I might have a kitchen by the end of next week...or not.
I eat out occasionally or don't eat. I have some bottled water and juice that I keep cold in the back room which has no heat.

Except for that back room, I do have heat. The house is warm even with the temperature low. I had insulation put in all the walls.

Its kind of like being in a hotel.....one room with a bed and tv. A European hotel with the bathroom on another floor and where the lights go off when there is a strike each day. A campground with no showers or hot water.

My life is so full of heavy lifting and hard labor getting everything in multiple houses ready for moving. My hands are covered with cuts and other wounds. I'm exhausted at all times. But tonight.....
